October is the official National Physical Therapy Month.  At senior living communities and rehabilitation centers, physical therapy is essential for getting loved ones back up on their feet after surgery, accidents, and other ailments.  The goal of National Physical Therapy Month is to raise awareness of the important role that physical therapy and physical therapists play in helping to decrease pain, improve mobility and allow people to get healthy more quickly.

There are over 88,000 physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, and students of physical therapy nationwide.  Each year, a different theme is chosen to celebrate National Physical Therapy Month.  This year the public education campaign centers around the top seven myths about physical therapy.

Those myths are:

  1. I need a referral to see a physical therapist.  Fact: All 50 states allow patients to be evaluated by a physical therapist without a physician’s referral.
  2. Physical therapy is painful.  Fact: Physical therapists work within your pain threshold to help you heal and restore movement and function.
  3. Physical therapy is only for injuries and accidents.  Fact: Physical therapists can help you with a wide range of issues with a focus on the lower body and back.
  4. Any health care professional can perform physical therapy.  Fact: 37 percent of people incorrectly believe that physical therapy can be performed by other health care professionals.
  5. Physical therapy isn’t covered by insurance. Fact: Most every insurance policy covers some form of physical therapy.
  6. Surgery is my only option.  Fact: Physical therapy has been shown to be just as effective as surgery in many medical ailments.
  7. I can do physical therapy myself.  Fact: While your participation is essential to having a successful physical therapy session, expert care and guidance is essential to getting the greatest benefit.

With that in mind, physical therapy is a staple at each of our communities.  Our Cherrywood Nursing & Living Center and Boulevard Health Center communities offer short-term care and rehabilitation with the goal being to get people home as healthy and as quickly as possible.  Our highly experienced physical therapists are key to making this happen.
